what is art therapy?

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy which uses creative tools and processes to explore emotions, experiences and difficulties alongside talking. This can offer a gentler way into the process of therapy as the focus is not only on talking. There is no experience or “talent” with art necessary. Artwork is kept confidential between you and the therapist and no judgement is put on the work.

Art therapy can be used to treat many of the mental health difficulties that affect children, teens and adults. These may include anxiety (art-making can be a naturally-regulating experience as it incorporates many of the senses), depression, self-esteem, low mood, trauma, body-image issues, difficulties related to neurodivergence, relationship issues, and bereavement.

My Approach

My approach is flexible and tailored to the needs of each client. Sometimes talking may feel like a more natural way to explore an issue. Sometimes creative tools can be brought in to help look at it in a different way. Many people feel a little nervousness when beginning- “how will I know what to do?” is a common question. I take care to guide clients through moments of uncertainty with suggestions or prompts that may be helpful. The therapy room offers a wide variety of art materials so that there is something enjoyable for everyone.
